Marketing At The Zoo
We went to the zoo two days ago. And there’s a cool lesson about marketing that I learned.
Well, Iman (my 2.5 year old daughter) picked up a new song. She came home one day from the daycare singing…
“The Elephant is so big… Thomp! Thomp! Thomp!”
“He has huge big legs… Thomp! Thomp! Thomp!”
And all with the dancing… it’s nice.
And she can’t stop. So I promised Iman that we’ll go the zoo again. The last time, she was too small and we missed the elephant show.
So this time we made in time for the show. The elephants sprayed some water at us with their trunks. And Iman almost cried. Honest, I didn’t know the elephants were going to do that. She’s going to remember that.
Anyway… about the lesson in marketing…
Well, after the elephant show, we saw some guys holding a python over their shoulders.
“Do you wanna pat her? She likes it when people pat her. Don’t worry, she won’t bite,” one of the guys said.
“Yeah, feel the scale,” the other one continued.
So I did. The feeling’s nice. Never touched a python before.
And then they continued, “Do you wanna take a photo with the python? We can have the whole family. It’s only RM15.”
RM15 is about $5USD or so. After holding the python for a while, I thought taking a photo would be nice. I would have agreed if Iman and my wife weren’t so scared.
But I learned something great there. You see, the two guys weren’t selling upfront. Just like how
you shouldn’t do with your marketing, don’t sell upfront.
Instead, do something to attract the crowd first. Lure them in and let the feel a gist of what you can offer. Once they have felt it, then you can start offering something more…
