Joe Vitale, P.T. Barnum and Mark Hughes (Buzzmarketing)

I have to confess, I buy more books than I read them. I remember a line in a move (which I forgot which) …

“You really read all these books?” a kid said to the host as he walked through the library.

“No … I have them just to impress people,” the host replied.

Anyway … right now I am reading “There’s A Customer Born Every Minute” by Joe Vitale. And as I read through the pages, I can’t help to think about how Joe Vitale, P.T. Barnum and Mark Hughes (who wrote Buzzmarketing - read review) are pretty much alike.

In some way or another, all three people believe in going after the masses. And in one form or another, all three people applies Buzzmarketing in their business.

For some of my readers who are not familiar with the name P.T. Barnum (when I first read about Joe Vitale a few years ago, I didn’t know about P.T. Barnum either), he is well-knowned for the Bailey and Barnum Circus, which is now Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. For those who knows the circus business, when you mention circus, the name Barnum will always come to mind.

Barnum lived from 1810 to 1892. And Barnum could possibly be the greatest marketing genius ever lived the planet. I once write somewhere, “If Barnum is still alive today, he’d sure be a billionaire.” Even during his life, he’s one of the richest man in United States.

During his life, he built his wealth, lost it and built it again … even greater the second time.

Anyway, back to the book, I am still reading this one. Sorry that I have a bad habit of writing about books even before I finish them. But I am enjoying every page of it. Joe Vitale, who famous for hypnotic copywriting sure knows how to suck people in with a good story.

The book is kinda like a story how Joe Vitale went on a quest to uncover P.T. Barnum’s business secrets. And at the same time, it’s also a story about P.T. Barnum’s business life. And along the way, Joe Vitale also uncovers Barnum’s 10 Rings Of Power that you can use in your business.I like reading books like this, where it’s enjoyable and informative at the same time. What makes it enjoyable is that it is written in a story like manner. It’s not just all how-tos, facts and theories. The stories makes the book alive, enjoyable and easy to read.

A few things that I learn from the book is that P.T. Barnum believed in advertising. In most if not all of the things that he promoted, he always have advertising in some for or the other. Sometimes it’s print advertising in the news paper, sometimes it’s flyers, sometimes it’s posters and sometimes it’s all of that.

Though P.T. Barnum advertise religiously, he also believed in the power of the press. P.T. Barnum also said that the press could be responsible for all of the dollars that he had. And a special thing about P.T. Barnum, he knows how to attract attention of the media.

And P.T. Barnum also believed in delivering a good service or a product. Attracting crowd is one thing, deliver a good product is another. Though P.T. Barnum put together hoaxes and outrageous events to attract the crowd, but once the customer is inside his museum or at his show, they’ll sure to get their money worth, in fact worth a lot more.

Being all these, doing advertising, attracting media attention, performing outrageous worth talking about, that is why I can’t stop to think that Joe Vitale, P.T. Barnum and Mark Hughes has a lot in common.

What do you know, even before the word buzzmarketing was a even a word, it’s already being used over 100 years ago.
