Reading Buzzmarketing by Mark Hughes

buzzmarketing.jpgThis is great book. Especially for only online marketers …

Why?

One reason is that it’ll stop you from running on the same old treadmill every online marketer is on.

Maybe you should stop and think, take a look at what you are doing … and start to see how you can achieve better, bigger results.

I am reading this book and still reading it … and I enjoy every word of it. Buzzmarketing tells you how to grow your business exponentially by taking the road less traveled.
As online marketers, we are too used to “targeted marketing”, “test-and-track” and all those mumbo-jumbo.

No doubt they work, but I agree with Mark Hughes, using conventional methods, you can expect conventional results. But Buzzmarketing takes a different route. What you are trying to achieve is exponential result and growth without the crazy costs.

Normal marketing … ROI = revenue / spend
Buzz marketing … could be ROI = revenue ^ x / spend
At the beginning of the book, Mark explains how he’s going to educate you in Buzz Marketing. It’s a two-leap process. First he’s going to show you examples of Buzz Marketing and how it has worked, for him, his clients and other businesses. Second he’s going to tell you how you can make Buzz Marketing work for you.
And he tells it pretty well, with examples of

  • his own success with Half.com which is sold to eBay 6-month after launch for $300 million
  • a small chiropractor practice that grew into a million dollar company
  • a beer company selling a special kind of beer where every other has failed
  • how Apple finally beats Commodore in sales back in 1984
  • American Idol almost nevered aired in America
  • how the power of Buzz Marketing has the power to boost SMS (text messaging) usage when advertising has failed
  • and plenty more …

Reading these stories are entertaining and educational at the same time.

Right now, I am half way through the book, and this is one book that I cannot put down. But now when I am thinking about marketing, I can’t stop but to think how to put the Buzz factor in there.

Is Buzz Marketing equals to Viral Marketing? -Definitely not.

Similar in some nature, but Buzz Marketing is far more powerful.

Instead of mass-marketing, buzz marketing is one-to-one marketing. Instead of being rewarded to carry your marketing message, buzz marketing is often free. Instead of spending big, buzz marketing is spending smart (out-think vs. out-spend). Instead of pushing the envelope, buzz marketing attracts the crowd in.

A must read? Definitely.
